How to Prepare for a Data Analyst Interview

Landing an interview for a data analyst role is exciting but preparing well is what helps you stand out and get the job.

At the Nigerian Society of Data Analysts and Business Intelligence Experts (NSDABIE), we help new analysts build the skills and confidence they need to succeed; from technical skills to soft skills to portfolio presentation.

Here’s your practical checklist for preparing and performing well in your next data analyst interview.

1️⃣ Understand the Role

Before you prepare, study the job description:
✅ What tools do they use? (Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Python, R)
✅ What industry are they in? (Finance, health, NGO, retail, tech)
✅ Are they looking for reporting, dashboarding, cleaning, or advanced analytics?

Knowing exactly what they want helps you focus your answers and examples.

2️⃣ Expect 3 Types of Questions

Most data analyst interviews combine:

✅ A) Technical Questions

These test your ability to work with data. Examples:

Excel:

• How would you use pivot tables?
• What is VLOOKUP / INDEX-MATCH?
• How do you handle missing values in Excel?

SQL:

• Write a query to find duplicate rows.
• Explain JOIN types (INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, FULL).
• How would you count unique customers?

Statistics:

• What’s the difference between mean and median?
• Explain correlation vs. causation.

Visualization:

• Which chart would you use to compare trends over time?
• How would you handle a dashboard with too much information?

Tip: Practice these with simple examples. Many companies ask you to write short queries or explain your steps on paper or screen.

B) Scenario / Case Questions

These check how you solve real problems:

• “Sales dropped last quarter — how would you investigate this?”
• “Our dashboard is slow — what would you check?”
• “How would you explain complex findings to a non-technical manager?”

Tip: Use a clear structure:

• Clarify the problem.
• Explain the steps you’d take.
• Talk about how you’d communicate results.

C) Portfolio or Project Questions

They may ask:

• “Tell us about a project in your portfolio.”
• “What was the challenge, and how did you solve it?”
• “Show us an example dashboard or report you’ve built.”

Tip: Be ready with 1–2 clear examples:

• What was the goal?
• What tools did you use?
• What was the outcome?
• What did you learn?

Even a class project, volunteer work, or Kaggle challenge counts — just make sure it’s well explained.

3️⃣ Prepare Your Own Questions

At the end, they’ll ask: “Do you have any questions for us?”
✅ Always say yes — this shows interest and maturity.

Good questions:

• “What does a typical day look like for a data analyst here?”
• “What are the biggest data challenges your team faces now?”
• “What tools and databases do you use most?”

4️⃣ Polish Your Soft Skills

A good analyst is more than code:
✅ Practice explaining your ideas clearly.
✅ Don’t hide mistakes — talk about how you fix them.
✅ Be honest if you don’t know an answer — explain how you’d find it.

5️⃣ Get the Basics Right

✔️ Test your tools if it’s a virtual interview — audio, camera, stable internet.
✔️ Dress smart, even for online calls.
✔️ Bring a pen and notebook for quick notes.
✔️ Follow up with a short thank-you email after the interview — it shows professionalism.
